Yes, I Am Big !

Ready to go on a Hidden Word Hunt ?!?

Some of these hidden, HFW, or Sight Words can stand alone and be part of a word family, like “at, an, and, it, in, is, on, & up”. They become extremely useful, powerful even, when your excited, new reader tries to “attack”, or decode an unfamiliar word, like kitten ~ think it, ten & keh.

Once your child knows some of these High Frequency , or Sight Words by themselves, s/he can make & READ, yes, READ a sentence, or sentences. Time to create the BIG STORY ?!? Yes, I Am !

We Can Play With A Dog !

High Frequency Words, or Sight Words, are usually common words found in text that do not follow the sound or phonetic rules, like Word Families do. Yes, I Am ! : Reading High Frequency Words Games  are engaging activities to help your emerging reader to memorize these common words and continue on to the next word. They can be considered “connectors.”

For beginning, or emergent readers, these connectors help with the “flow”, or fluency of the reading. Plus, they are great confidence-boosters, especially if hidden in an unknown word, like “up” in “pup”.

This 21~ page (includes front & back manual covers) download, copy & printable resource in an 8″x11″ PDF will give your beginning reader the confidence to “attack”, or decode unknown words during a read.

Tips & Ideas

Use the HFW strips as a checklist in your Manual for fluency, mastery & review. You know your child’s consistency with retention as to how many repetitions are needed for mastery. Five or more seems to be a good number.

Use blocks, Legos and/or other puzzles to build structures to replace the “Yes, I Am !” puzzles.

Mix up the word cards to make sentences, ie “I can see.” Reading HFW alone becomes more powerful when read as parts of a sentence.

Include “Other Words I Know” in the mix.

Accept “silly sentences” especially if the words are being read accurately. Be sure to ask if the sentence makes sense to subtly reinforce grammar.

Trade places with your learner and make mistakes so your “teacher” can help you learn.
